Roster Continues to Take Shape

by Jared Tennant

The Mentor Ice Breakers have made another round of signings, adding eight more players on PTO contracts, including a returning defenseman and a pair of netminders.

Because these are PTO contracts, none of these players are guaranteed to make the Ice Breakers’ opening night roster. However, they will have the chance to compete for roster spots as the season approaches.

Below is a full breakdown of players who signed contracts:

Brad HolmanPort Huron Prowlers (FPHL)
Tyelor DosterHelena Bighorns (NA3HL)

Raymond SmithIFK Ore (Sweden, Division 3)
Brandon RozziSacred Heart University (ACHA II)

Defenseman Alfonso Diaz is back in the fold after suiting up for 46 games with the Ice Breakers last season. Additionally, blueliner Brett Mackell could play a significant role despite being considered a rookie. The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder will be 27 when the season begins and is coming off a 100-point career at Villanova University (ACHA).

Kameron Wilson and netminder Raymond Smith were teammates last year with IFK Ore (Division 3) in Sweden along with defenseman Thomas Bell, who signed with the Ice Breakers earlier this offseason. Smith and Brandon Rozzi will compete with Kent Nusbaum and Jake Mullen for playing time in net.

Offensively, forward Brad Holman brings three years of professional experience overseas and played a pair of games with the Port Huron Prowlers last year. Tyelor Doster is a young, skilled forward while Cameron VanOirschot could fill a veteran leadership role in the Ice Breakers locker room.

The Ice Breakers are set to return for their third season of play this October. To sign up for the team’s official mailing list and be notified when season ticket details for the upcoming year are released, click here.
